On March 17, 2022, Chevron Marine had the first customer delivery in Tangier Med port as part of our partnership expansion with AKWA Group and our delivery agents’ activities.

The Chevron Marine and AKWA agreement was signed in 2020 and reflects the materialization of Brand Extension projects in Northwest Africa including Algeria, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Togo, Tunisia, Senegal, Niger, Mauritania, Mali, Guinea, Benin, Gabon, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The location of Tangier Med is strategic as it is close to the Strait of Gibraltar.

After its startup operation back in 2007, Tangier Med has shown notable growth in servicing marine customers focusing mainly on container vessels as a big Transshipment Hub. In 2020, Tangier Med served 5,77MTEU’s showing an increase by +20.20%, compared to 2019.

Tangier Med is ranked as the number one Mediterranean container terminal, overpassing Piraeus, Valencia, and Algeciras, as shown below.

Tangier Med currently operates three terminals (APM, Eurogame and TC3), and has an ambitious expansion project to increase the containers capacity by +1.50MTEU’s in a few years.

Considering the importance of the location and the opportunity it offers us to support our customers’ growth, Chevron Marine decided to launch Northwest Africa supply operations from Tangier Med.

The key drivers of this decision are:

  • The ability to supply directly without ship chandlers’ involvement.
  • Proximity of production facilities to terminal, enhancing prompt deliveries.
  • Adequate products slate to meet most customers’ needs.
  • Improved capacity for bulk and packed supply of products.
  • Ability to process both Group I and Group II base oils.
  • Strong supply chain set up.

These developments in Morocco are aimed at expanding our global supply network in an area with favorable prospect for rapid growth of Marine business.
