Q&A with Pat McCloud

General manager, Europe & global marine lubricants

Did the COVID-19 pandemic affect marine lubricant supply and demand? How did Chevron Marine Lubricants react to any shift in the market?

The COVID-19 pandemic posed a number of challenges for the shipping industry particularly around logistics. Despite this, the market has performed well in the last two years.

Chevron handled these challenges by adapting to the swift digital shift in direction brought on by the pandemic. Chevron created and continues to develop digital enablements that provide customers with the support required to stay on course. In the absence of face-to-face interaction, alternative solutions were developed that remain effective to date.

What do you think is the most important issue facing the Maritime Industry today?

The current focus is the energy transition journey and compliance with industry regulations. Specifically, how to help reduce the life-cycle carbon intensity of transportation fuels while helping meet the world’s growing energy needs.

We are advancing our commitment to provide affordable, reliable, and ever-cleaner energy through continual learning and development of lower carbon offers that create value for our customers.

What aspects will be essential in R&D for the development of future lubricant products?

We are taking action to reduce our carbon intensity. We will continue to lower the carbon intensity of our operations with a focus on methane, flaring and energy management.

The use of different fuels will be key for the shipping industry to meet de-carbonization and greenhouse gas emissions targets set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Chevron has expertise in lubricating vessels operating on LNG and Methanol, and are exploring emerging technologies, fuels, and lubricants to enable a lower carbon future for the marine industry.

Chevron’s goal is to have lubrication solutions available for customers specifically for the marine engines to operate on next-generation fuels.
